My little Nan is the Rez Jam 2006 Frybread Champion, beating out a dozen or so other competitors during the Chili Cook-Off/Frybread Contest. Z-man made a pretty good chili as well, but the judges chose chilis that tasted a tad better than your typical Wendy’s fast-food concoction. Nan started off with her great-grandmother’s buttermilk recipe and tweaked it a little after the first batch didn’t come out quite right. The two were the only kids in the contest, all the rest were adults my age or older, who had been making chili or frybread for decades, so it was cool that Nan won.
One notable entrant made his chili with caribou, or so he says, and it was pretty good. The meat was tasty, not gamey at all—didn’t taste too different from venison. They had musical artists performing throughout the day, which was cool. There was a lady’s drum group and a bluegrass trio—both did all their songs in Ojibwe. There was also a rock band and a rapper—Litefoot. He was in the movie “The Indian in the Cupboard” and played . . . the Indian, of course. It was alright, the kids had fun, I saw my bro for a minute, ate lots of chili and probably half of Nan’s “award winning” frybread.
