that song

I think i got that song,
the one about Armageddon or whatever,
four whole chords nothing more,
I can show you how to play it if you like,
want to bring you along,
want to fix everything I've done wrong,
want you to learn that anything's possible,
all the things i always put aside,
hey, I got part of the solo to another tune,
that one by Silverstein,
remember I thought that classmate was a fan?
I was gonna ask her but turns out that was her name,
woulda been embarrasing for you I'm sure,
your old man thinking he's cool,
but look, seriously, just want you to know,
anything's possible--just open your mind,
so much i've left untried,
so much has been left unsaid,
things seem to be falling together,
now that i've given up,
just living day-to-day,
got nothing much to look forward to,
but that guitar and the board,
both give me hope of something better,
stupid i know but the way it is,
that solo is pretty cool,
forget that Black Sabbath-crappola,
too moody for me too old school I guess,
ooh, well I take that back,
the lyrics are pretty dark after all--
maybe freudian, if I believed in him,
which i don't say never mind,
but here's the last part:

Silverstein- Smashed Into Pieces

You made me swear [x2].
I, I can't sleep.
Realize all these things that you took from me.
Smash my heart (you made me swear)
into dust. (you made me swear)
Suffocate my mind. (you made me swear)
Tear at me from inside. (you made me swear)
Smash apart what you created.
How can i ever stop you from crushing my soul?
It was, it was yours, yours to begin with

Had a real fun session with my oldest today,
over at Ranney in Lansing,
one of the best days I've had in a long, long time...
was flowing really well>good speed, nice and high on the wall,
just a few inches below the coping,
nice smooth kickturns and carves all the way around...
man, what a kickass day...
my son fell a coupla times, but this was the first time he's skated in about 6 months, and he's grown almost 3 inches in that time span,
so he's rusty and trying to get used to his new body as well.

now i'm retabbing some Minor Threat songs,
playing some Husker Du on the electric and drinking PBR,
I really don't think it gets any better than this...

04.17.08

felt every bit of my 39 years,
maybe a dozen more for good measure,
been walking two miles a day,
still didn't prepare me for two minutes on the board,
just the way it goes/what did i expect,
hopping mad by the end of my session,
but you get what you give,
and i ain't given anything yet,
lost no blood or sweat,
have yet to sacrifice a bit at all,
can't just expect to hop back onboard,
when i don't deserve shiite,
story of my life so far,
day by day gotta give,
try to improve little by little,
sometimes i just need to shut up and live,
see what life brings me and be aware,
growing and changing everyday,
the real work behind the scenes,
sometimes giant leaps or small steps,
go with the flow and ride the wave,
the simplest acts sometimes the hardest,
getting back up after wiping out,
wipe away the blood and try again,
someday when i'm much older and grayer,
i look back and remember these golden days,
a simple man just trying to live,
to give the best that he had,
even for a few short moments,
a fainting glimpse of something greater,
unbound from gravity's pull,
a brief shining moment in the sun,
inbetween soul decaying days behind a desk,
discovered a self that never went away,
discovering and creating all the while,
lost in the pages so very long,
forgot how to live and love,
this very moment wasting away,
remembering the things that take my breath away,
remembering what it is to be happy again,
back on the board and headed in the right direction,
going whichever which way the day may take me,
i'm alive/so alive/i'm alive...

4.14.08

Haven't skated in almost five months,
chomping at the bit can't wait til tomorrow,
warm and dry first time in forever,
got an appointment with some concrete,
me and no one else over at Ranney,
just an Old Man celebrating his 39th,
just glad to be alive,
got some dues to pay,
had to pay the piper,
can't believe what I been thru,
crazy a$$ winter full of drama,
gonna get right with my man Mike,
I made a promise I intend to keep,
all the legal stuff behind me,
too ashamed for so long,
had to come to grips with reality,
sometimes life kicks you in the nads,
just to remind you that they're there,
separated from my homies,
but tomorrow is a new day,
Happy Thai New year to OMA,
gonna go out and see what I got,
little fat me on 7-plys,
carve and caress those magical walls,
take my lumps take my falls,
no place to be nothing to do,
just gonna go for a little cruise,
my SPF's screaming for smooth 'crete,
sporting some new kicks on my stinky feet,
cocooned away all winter long,
tomorrow brings a new song,
let her rip and see what happens,
got few skills/no tail-tapping,
but what i got can't be bought,
victim of my own leisure,
try to overcome what i've wrought,
man on a mission so get outta the way,
this old man is gonna go skate...

snapshots

Little snapshots in time,
Frozen in place for all to see,
This is me at this moment,
A fleeting memory for the binojiinhs,
Just a man trying to live his life,
Dragged down by the demons of my past,
Running away from my problems,
Saa saa biish miinaawaa bier,
Ojibwe-Thai for denial,
Washing away the pressures momentarily,
Only to be reminded again and again.
This is no way to live one’s life,
But I’m trying to be true to myself,
After years of feeling unworthy,
We push and pressure you,
Only because we want something better,
Our limitless choices and endless horizons,
Close and stagnant over time,
Bound by GPA’s and test scores,
Job histories and self-imposed ceilings,
I want you to pick and choose,
And to follow your bliss.
Operating on nothing but emotion,
My head in the clouds and body trapped,
The work-a-day world killing me slowly,
Mind-numbing and soul-decaying,
Barely keeping a roof over our heads,
Letting you down at every turn,
These endless days of your youth,
Soon slip into adulthood and speeds up,
Days turn into weeks turn into months,
Years have slipped away before you realize,
Left with nothing but unfulfilled promises.
I point the way and show you the truth,
But you have to do for yourselves,
To try even if you fail is better,
Than to have never tried or lived,
All the coulda-been/shoulda-beens,
Gnawing away at half-living selves,
Bitter and usless shell of humanity,
So learn from my failures and live,
See how “guncles” and the rest never did,
Wasted all our chances because of doubt,
Spread your wings and at least try.
I made a promise to myself to do,
Cheesy poetry/three chords/skateboarding,
All things I’ll never excel at,
But they make me happy,
So I’m going to keep doing,
Stop putting off living until tomorrow,
Live each day the best I can,
Leave this life with few regrets,
All the things I should have done,
Should have said or tried,
No longer casting a shadow on my days.

long season of doubt

Long season of doubt draws to a close,
Barren winter finally gives way to spring,
Traditional Thai New Year begins now,
Frozen mornings notwithstanding,
Hope and faith give it one more try,
As I sat and listened to Dhamma (Dharma),
The story about the lotus once again,
Petals opening up as sunlight hits,
Like knowledge opening our eyes,
But I’m still trying to get out of the mud.
If you’re practice is sucky that’s on you—
Ajahn (teacher, monk) chides us jokingly but serious,
He can only give us what is taught,
What has been handed down these 2552 years,
The rest is up to us to work on ourselves,
So many questions not sure where to start,
My practice remains frozen in the mud,
No sitting meditation for months at a time,
Ajahn gives us the unadulterated truth,
Dhamma passed down through 102 generations.
What you think and do,
Is it of benefit to others and to you?
Sometimes but not always,
Still self-destructive after all these years,
Thinking leads to talking which leads to doing,
How many lifetimes will it take to undo all my wrongs,
How many wrongs have I committed in past lifetimes,
Is there really an end to this vicious cycle,
Or is it all just a morality tale,
Ajahn just trying to keep us in line?
The Tao of Physics rears its head once again,
Alternate realities and wormholes perhaps real,
So the scientists claim,
Bound by faith to things they can’t see,
Dark matter making up 97% of all there is,
But yet we can’t see it/hold it/prove it,
Gravity pulls us to terra firma,
Echoes of a fourth dimension we’ll never know,
Unless that’s where we all go from here,
The afterlife/the beyond/heaven and hell.
Hard to believe this universe just happened,
Just randomly came about through lucky accidents,
What are the chances/the probability,
A trillion-to-one/infinity-to-none,
Just for one event let alone billions,
That produced this universe and this world,
Countless happy accidents that lead to now,
These are all interesting questions,
But the wrong ones to ask,
Or so Ajahn would probably say.
Glimpses and shadows of something else,
Us living in this three-dimensional universe,
What lies beyond what lies in the fourth and fifth,
Mediation/mental development/states of consciousness,
A sliver of the whole picture,
We never use more than ten percent of our brains,
What is the other ninety percent capable of,
Stories about levitation/telepathy/telekinesis,
Not that important in the Buddhist sense,
Just by-products of the real work to be done.
What does this meditation do in the end?
Open the doors to perception of the beyond?
Bring us to the ground of being,
Face to face with God and ourselves,
Give us an entrance into the unknown,
Vast universes and realities outside or own?
The cessation of birth and rebirth,
Is this merely and analogy or is it real,
Nibbhana (Nirvana) being the end result,
Do we just sit and watch the show,
From dimensions far removed?
It is said that the Dhamma will always exist,
In one form or another in some place,
The social/historical/cultural trappings will fall away,
But the truth remains just the same,
Always and forever through eons of time,
This universe in a speck,
Infinity in one single moment,
The nothingness that encapsulates all,
The middle of the lotus blossom,
When all the pedals have fallen away.

Happy Thai New Year 2552

Lion's Share-the Germs
Verse:
E-5555-33-555--3333-11-333-
play twice as an intro to 1st and 3rd verses 4x during verse
chorus: E-1111115555555333333666666 1x
end of chorus: A-5555-33-555- 4x

This is a really simple song, but sounds really good just the same.
I don't have a cooy of the Germs doing this however, I bought a Germs tribute album and Seattle grungers L7 do an amazing cover of this song. Other notable artists on that album are members of Sonic Youth, Flea, NoFX, J. Mascis and Mike Watt, Courtney Love, Keith Morris, etc . . .
Al Compton had a copy of the Germ's G.I. album and I remember being blown away by the sound back in 1985 . . . here I am in 2008, playing their songs, just trying to get my guitar chops in--
Stony, at work, gave me his old Ibanez DS7 Distortion pedal, so I've been having a lot of fun with that. Something so soothing about that sonic crunch.
Oh, Happy Thai New Year, it's the year 2552, I think...went to the Dhammasala this afternoon with the boys and heard a good Dhamma talk, first in a long time.
